First of let me explain this, you have front wheel drive and rear wheel drive. Simple enough, give the car gas and the front wheels or rear wheels spins.
OK real easy. Most cars are 2 wheel drive (when you give it gas only 2 wheels spin). On a 4WD you can which on the 4WD and when you give it gas all 4 wheels will spin or turn it off and you go back to front wheel or rear wheel drive. On an AWD, no matter what you do when you give it gas all 4 wheels spin. It depends on what type of driving and driving conditions you are in as to which will be better for you.
I'm an ex-cop and a car salesman and for my wife I want her to have a front wheel drive vehicle and optional 4WD if she needs it.

A common misnomer is that 4 wheel drive is all four wheels driving at the same time. This is not true, usually the system is set up on a limited slip differential, which means the tires that slips doesn't get power and the tires with grip do. The difference between all wheel and 4 wheel is that all wheel is usually full time, and 4 wheel is as needed.

4wd=you can run on 2 or 4 wheels
awd=its always on 4 wheel drive.some vehicles allow you to switch from 4 to 2 wheels.

4WD can be turned on and off so the vehicle isn't always in 4WD, AWD means the vehicle is in 4WD all the time.

Simple explination:
All wheel drive delivers power to all four wheels all the time, and usualy is on passenger cars.
Four wheel drive delivers power to the rear wheels all the time, but you have the option of engaging power to all wheel drive in dificult driving conditions. Usualy on trucks, and large SUVs.
