So, you don't want to work for your paycheck and benefits. And you'd like to pay dues into a system that, in this day and age, only exists to maintain the infrastructure created back when unions were needed in this country.

Unions are usually interested in recruiting skilled and effective people and placing them with good employers. If you have a trade and you are hirable you might consider approaching an employer that runs a union shop. Go ahead and explain that you are interested in the training and advancement that is offered by the union and he/she might direct you to the union steward, who will tell you all about it.

I have never been in a union. I know many people who have had very good and some bad experiences with unions. I am sure that it can be a very positive experience. Work hard and live within your means.

join an honest one at least. Living in Michigan I have seen first hand the problems unions have caused. My home town had one manufacturing job, with the headquarters in another town that had the same type of manufacturing. they closed down my home town plant that had almost half the workers as its sister plant and they made less than half the money. Why? because the other plant was unionized. The company said it would rather have left the small town one opened but the unions had them cornered. So the town with the least amount of employees doing the same productivity as the over manned shop gets closed down. Laziness. Thats what unions breed.

Look in the phone book for the local office of the union you want to join. Call them and get the requirements. Example: IBEW = International Brotherhood of Electrical Works will be listed in the phone book for your area following by "Local #____. Every union has a local #.

Usually, you get a job then join the union, sometimes you might need to start an apprentiship (Trainee) and work your way up to a Journeyman or Class "A" Mechanic. But for the most part, take a civil service test, work for the Government and then you can join.

Why would you want to become a union hymie and be told how to vote, what to buy, where to live all while paying the corrupt union leadership your money to violate your rights and turn you into a legalized extortionist???? Makes no sense to me. Be a man, stand up on your own two feet.
