i have a new tree that i planted in the fall of 2005. it is now the end of march 2007 and my tree does not have any leaves. is this normal. how can i tell if my tree is alive

Look for buds around the stem of branches... If they look like they are starting to open, you are fine. If not, you probably planted it too late in the season. Buy another now and plant in about 4 weeks. End of April

Are the branch tips flexible or brittle. Brittle is dead.
Scratch the bark with your thumb nail, should be bright green, not yellow, brown or even dull green.
Are there buds? Flick one off. Is it green or brown.

Finally, grab hold of the trunk or larger limb. If it is cooler than the air temperatures, it's moving water within, that's good. If the trunk as "assumed air temperature" that's bad. No water, dead.

did it have leaves in 2006? if it did its to early in this year for it to have leaves. if it didnt its dead, scrap some bark with finger nail on branch and see if its green if not then dead, plant a new one
