They know they are breaking the law. The issue is that they may feel justified in remaining in a country illegally for a variety of reasons, including: they feel oppressed in the nation from which they fled; better job/economic opportunity in the new country; the intention to become a legal citizen once they are in their desired country.

I think they realize they are breaking the law. They know what it means. They just didn't wake up one morning in their country and say I am going to live in America. Word is passed amongst them all. Someone somewhere along the line got into America, realized it's a good place to live, raise a family and the work is much better. They can make more money and in turn send it home to their families. They don't mind to work cheap and work hard, that's why they get so many jobs. I don't mind that people from other countries come to this country to live but should do it the right way. Go through all the legal steps to become a citizen of this country and first and foremost get into an English class (this should be a requirement). I definitely disagree with their ability to not speak English. I got turned down on a job because I was not bi-lingual. I live in the United States of America, in an English speaking state...I should not have to learn another language to get a job. That is my only problem with it.

They don't care about the law because nobody is enforcing it.
Also they are driven by hunger and wanting something better.
If all we had to do put laws on the books to stop crime our jails would be empty.

They do realize it - that is what illegal means.
The issue is they don't care.

They know they are and don't care. If they thought different, they would be crossing at crossings no sneaking in at night
