if possible, could you find video clips to help illustrate? i need this for a physics presentation and i can't seem to find much. thanks!

It's a simple, efficient electric motor in series with your power supply line. The reference probably contains more information than you need, but you'll need to use your mind in place of a video clip.

I assume you mean the type in your house that has a rotating aluminium disc. Coils produce eddy currents in the disc relative to the power. The disc rotates and the number of rotations are counted by a series of gears and drums with number on them.

Try investiganing the operation of the meter installed
in your house. Try to interchange some of the wires
attached to it. After few attempts you will be able to
reverse the direction of its rotation, dramatcally reducing
your energy costs. I guarantee that your presntation will
draw extra attention in this case.
