Downloading is simply transferring data to your computer from another computer.

Installing is actually placing the components of a software package into the right places on your computer to make the software useable.

So one could say "I downloaded a program to my computer - at that point it was just a file. But then I installed the program on my computer, and now I can use it to do things."

Typically, downloading is the process of moving data from a remote location (such as a web site's server) to a local location (such as your computer). Installation is the process of putting files in a specific location, setting up configurations, etc. in order to execute (use) a piece of software.

Here's a way to think about this: food.

Download is like going to the supermarket and bringing the food home. Installing is like cooking the food.

OK, it's an odd analogy, but it shows how different downloading and installing really are.

When you download something, you are just putting the file on your computer. When you install it, you are putting all the necessary components for use on your computer so that the program is ready to use.
