In all honesty, I usually only answer when I think I can offer something of value or really help someone out. I try to generally focus on my areas of expertise and avoid the rest.
Actually, for this reason I generally avoid the polls and surveys section of the site, because it only pulls down my best answer percentage, which by doing mostly only the above I have been able to drive into the 70's. I don't care so much about points, it's having a reputation for good answers that I like to shoot for. (I'd also like to get on a catagory leaderboard or 2.)
I honestly get a tiny rush each time an asker actually picks my answer and I'm always looking for that next "fix" as it were. ☺
Occasionally, though, just for fun, it's nice to tackle a few "survey" questions, and that's why I picked your question!
(I hope that doesn't make me a troll... I am not sure what a troll is...)

There's no point in answering to get best answer, because often times, the best answer is not chosen for it's thoughtfulness but solely because it is agreeable to the asker. In other words, best answers are answers that the asker wants to hear.
I answer questions to express my opinions, and it's a take it or leave it situation after that.

maybe all three some times i give helpful answers and some times sarcastic answers and i could care less about the points and it always surprises me when i get a best answer it puzzles me seeing as how i got close to 700 of them

I just come to let off some steam. I don't care about badges, points, contact lists, or anything like that. Sometimes I'm helpful, but I just pretty much stick to sarcasm and wit.

I try and answer the question sincerely. Of course I always hope for best answer, sometimes it happens and other times not so much.

i just like to give my advice hoping it will help someone i really dont care about the points. im actually surprised that i have gotten as many best answers as i have. lol
