My perfectly maintained Avalon XLS has low mileage( 49,000 miles). Its engine has been extremely quiet, so far. But in the last couple of weeks, I noticed that when I accelerate while doing low speed (about 45 mph, at 1800 rpm), I started hearing a muffled roaring noise. It is hard to pinpoint the source or direction of the noise, whether it comes from the front or from underneath. Cursory inspection shows the tail pipe and muffler to be in perfect shape. What could be the cause of the noise ? I certainly would appreciate some suggestions. Thanks.

Has someone replaced/serviced the air filter lately?
They may not have installed the air filter cover properly, or the intake tube to it has come loose.
The noise you hear may be the engines air intake system.
Double check the air filter housing for proper fit and secureness.

It could be the exhaust manifold, have it checked at a muffler shop.
