I have no lease and there is not even a verbal agreement in place with the apartment that I'm renting now. Is it bad character to move tell my landlord this close to the end of the month that I'd like to move out.

NO WAY! your landlord knew what he was getting into when he let you rent it without a lease contract. its not your fault you want to move, thats why your just RENTING the apartment. plus, any SMART landlord knows that in the world of business, if you dont have a contract then the consumer is free to go WHENEVER they want. as long as you've paid your rent for the month then you havent broken any laws so i say go. it's his responsibility to deal with finding another renter, not yours. leases are made to hold the resident responsible and you DONT have one so get out of there! however, you could be nice and give him more time but if your ready to leave now then there's no way he can hold you legally responsible without a contract unless your state law requires it.

If there is no lease then you are under no restrictions technically. However, you should always give him 2 weeks notice so he can find someone to replace you. That would be the morally right thing to do. Unless they have a terrible landlord in which case wait till the last second and dont even tell him you are moving out.

If you have no agreement to the contrary, the usual standard is 30 days notice and must cover one full tenancy period, a month in this case. This is usually codified in local law. If you give notice today, it would be effective on 1 May 2007. You would be liable for payment of rent through 30 April 2007

BTW, you DO have a verbal agreement in place. He told you the rent and you said, "OK," and he handed you the keys. That IS a verbal agreement.

That depends on when rent is due. By law, no matter where you live, the landlord (and this is regardless of agreements, verbal, written or otherwise) must give you at least 30 days, even to evict you. So you should extend the same courtesy.

If there is no written lease then you are good to go. Not bad character at all to tell yoru landlord that you are moving out. Just make sure to give him 2-3 weeks notice so that he can work on finding a new tenant.

yes, most areas require 30 days notice, but since you have no lease or agreement i don't think the landlord can come after you. but be aware that he may not give you a favoriable recommendation on future rental applications.
