I was referred to a psychologist for counseling. His office staff said at the first visit, to discuss payment arrangements with him. His fee is $120 per visit. What would be considered a "fair offer", as I cannot afford $250 per month!

That is the going rate for a good psychologist. Unfortunaltely, over the years insurance has cut benefits in the area of mental health and psychologists can no longer afford to negotiate rates as they once did. It is very frustrating and unfair. Some communities do have mental heath services for free - check into it.

Like anything else in a market economy, it depends on what area you are in and how many other psychologists there are who do the same type of work.

However, you might want to "shop" around and interview several different therapists until you find one you feel comfortable and work well with...and who offer a fee that feels right.

There are therapists who offer a sliding fee scale.

Screw that, go talk to an intelligent, sensitive friend. Those head shrinks don't know anything the rest of us don't. What a bloody bunch of scammers.
