To my knowledge tourists have not been targeted in terrorist attacks. Unlike in Egypt. So I would say it would be safe to travel as a tourist.

I have travelled to Sri Lanka twice in the last 5 years. It is a beautiful country with wonderful people and history. However it is troubled and you will experience road blocks etc. Chances are if you go nothing bad will happen to you, lets face it we run a risk getting on the tube going to work every day.
If you do go I receommend a hotel called Kandalama - quite simply the most stunning setting for a hotel I have ever seen.

I am actually going to Sri Lanka this weekend and I am not worried. I have been there many times. My advice is to keep away from the north and east, it is practically impossible to travel there anyway. The Tamils are not after tourists, but it is possible to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Go, enjoy and see the place. It is beautiful. I think most risk in the areas you can travel would be in the big cities of Galle and Colombo. But do not avoid them, they are worth a visit. Sri lanka needs tourism to survive.

LTTE won't dare to touch tourists. There are too smart for that. The situation in Sri Lanka is very different from the one happening in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Don't listen to Vandhiya. He doesn't know any thing about the war.LTTE is the worst kind of terrorists in the world, the Sri Lankan forces only kills the terrorists.

The war is only in the some parts of North and East.
It is far from Colombo,Kandy or Galle (the major cities).
The level of security is good.
But if u r so scared then u should make the decision.

I was there last month and I will NEVER accept a visit to that country again, even if for the love of a million Euros. They have security checks everywhere, the airport is in shambles, hotels have scarce facilities and food is awful and spicy. It's pretty cheap but the threat of being ambushed by terrorists or muggers is real and very potent.

If you avoid the north and east, you should be OK.

The risk is reflected in the low cost of holidays in Sri Lanka.
