I don't know which processor is best or anything!

Are Acer and Advent decent makes?

The laptop will primarily used for internet, although it might be used for photo storage etc as well. It won't have Word or Excel or anything like that. Probably no games either.

Thanks for any tips!!

Please don't buy an advent. They are made by packard Bell for the currys and pc world group. Packard Bell are reknowned not to be good machines. I should know I have had 2 of them but their laptops seem to be better than their pc's through what people say on here.

Out of the 2 I would definately buy the Acer as we have 2 Acers in our family already. One was a cheap £400 machine and the other a £600 dual core 5612 which you can get from currys now for £499. The spec is better than the Acer you are looking at but ONLY as the currys one has a dual core processor. Acer are the 4th largest producer in the world so they are definately a known brand. They are current sponsors of the works yamaha moto gp team.

You could have a look at ebuyer as well. They have good prices and deliver next day. HP is a good make too.

Hope this helps

In my experience Acer seems to hold up better in the long run then advent. you also have other advantages with the acer.
1. in optimum conditions (assuming both batteries are the same) the battery will last longer out in the field then the advent (because of the type of processor)
2 The processor in the Acer is rated a little faster
3. obviously the screen will be bigger (but what type of screens do both have?)
DSTN - BAD!!!!
TFT - very good
4. the graphics card is slightly better in the acer

hope this helps good luck and have fun online

Have you tried Dell they have great deals were you get upgraded on your ram and hard drive. Thats were i got mine for 479 with a similar package but the processor was a double processor. I think it's great. It's worth havin a look at anyway. Good luck with what ever you choose.

My husband bought and ACER and he is just so pleased with it. It was within his budget though he would have preferred a toshiba but it was bit pricey for what he wanted to use it for.

It's courses for horses what suits one person is another man's poison so to speak.

Best to ask yourself what are your own requirements and see what laptop meets that critieria and whittle down your choices that way.

Make an informed choice and not on persuasion.

The Acer looks like a better deal to me and has a bigger lcd screen.

I would recommend Intel Core Duo 2.3 Ghz, thats fastest processor, and get 2 G Ram. You need these two things for your laptop, if you just going to use your laptop for Internet. Try this website for buying good laptop

i like the acer's specs a lot better (you didn't mention the price of the advent, though). the only problem is the 17". i don't like big laptops because carrying them around can be a real hassle. 15.4" is the maximum i would do, so i would go for the advent.

I would log onto Dells website as they are very reputable and good prices too, I,m just waiting for them to do interest free credit, then I will be buying from them. Although they don,t do it very often, but I,m sure it,s about to come up
