There really aren't 'others' in the mainstream unless you consider the powerPC architecture -which is only used in Macs.

It depends what you want to do with it - certain types of applications will exhibit greater speedups with the Intel, while others are better accelerated by the AMD. The reasons for this are extremely complicated and not worth trying to get your head around (you could do several PHDs in this subject alone).

The bottom line is - if it's for general purpose (office applications etc) then it *really* doesn't matter. If you have a more specific application in mind, google for some 'benchmark' tests of the processors you are thinking about - these will tell you in real-terms what kind of performance you can expect from each under certain conditions.

Remember - AMD X2 is a 64-bit dual core processor range, same as Intel Duo.

Depends on what you are after. All the tests point to Intel Core 2 Duo being the best performer at the moment. No contest.

Intel are slightly ahead of AMD at the moment.

Definately get a dual core processor. I would recommend Intel at the moment, have a look on ebuyer.co.uk to check out prices.

AMD and Intel are both excellect processors. If I would reccommend anything go with the 64-bit, Dual-core processors. I myself have an AMD Turion 64 dual-core.
