For a single event in a relatively short period of time, my guess would be the assassination of JFK. There was a huge outpouring of sympathy letters to Mrs. Kennedy and family. My sixth grade teacher had each of us write a letter and without exception, everyone in class wrote a heartfelt letter without hesitation and I think nearly every American ( and some from other countries as well) school child alive that day participated in the outpouring in some way.

Civil War? Somehow Gettysburg comes to mind. I've read a few letters that were written by soldiers to their families and sweethearts, quite heartbreaking, really.
