Its important to understand that when reading any kind of history, it is only one account. For example, a battle may be recorded as having been lost by one side or the other. But, perhaps, that battle was lost strategically, in order to win a greater one on a different front. History will not report that, however. It will merely count the battle as being lost.
My suggestion is that you read as many sources as possible when trying to learn and understand about the history of any event or country. It is the only way you can get the most rounded accounts...

Because, as the saying goes, history is written by the victors. Whoever lost all those major wars is portrayed as the badguys, because they weren't the ones who got to record what happened.
