I asked this question earlier, but with the way it was worded, no one seemed to want to answer it. I have a few appointments this week to see some (vacant) apartments and I'm just wondering if it's appropriate to take a camera with me. Every other time I've gone apartment hunting, I always forget what the apartments look like by the time I'm finished.
Thanks - and a have a lovely day.

When I was apartment hunting, I did. That way, I could show photos of the apartment to my roommate or simply compare apt A to apt B. I also printed "review" sheets for each apartment with the address, landlord's contact 411, and sections to describe the neighborhood, building, rooms, bath, etc. I would take photos and fill-out the form while on site. It may seem a little "anal", but I consistently got great apartments in a difficult Chicago market with few or no surprises after signing the lease. It's okay to take photos of any plainly visible feature, but do not take photos inside bedroom closets or non-permanent features (like dressers, etc.). Use your best judgement if you want to take pics of coat closets, linen closets, or pantries.

This is YOUR investment and there is nothing inappropriate about making sure you get your facts straight. If the tenants have an issue with you taking photos, tough. They should have signed a renewal or bothered to remove their goods from plain sight. If the landlord has issues, say thank you and leave.

Yes. It is completely appropriate. Especially if the apartments are vacant. If the apartments are not vacant, just avoid taking pictures of identifiable and or possibly valuable objects such as artwork or the personal pictures of the current tenants.

I don't see a problem taking a camera with you when your looking at apartments. Seems like a smart thing to do.
It would only get weird if you took pictures of the people still living in the apartment esepcially if they were in the shower.
Trust me. I've learned from experience. They don't like those pictures.

Not only is it appropriate, it's an EXCELLENT idea! And when you sign the lease, bring your camera along on the move-in inspection to provide backup documentation of the condition of the unit.

Any landlord or property manager that won't allow that should be dropped from your list totally!

I wouldn't worry about that do what you feel is justifiable in taking those pictures. You can always send them back to the owner if you really feel like you are doing something wrong...

Of course it is appropriate. It will help you to remember the colors, dimensions of rooms, layout and things that you did or didn't like.

Wow..I think it's a great idea! It allows you to visually compare what you've seen in a quiet and pensive atmosphere.

No, it's kind of anal or weird but to each their own.
