what is wrong with Wal-Mart?

Lots of reasons:

Reason 1. They low ball all their vendors, forcing them to sell items at the cost Wal-Mart wants to but things at, which force the manufacturer to have their goods made overseas, which cause job losses for American manufacturing, then they pay the people overseas very little.

Reason 2. They pay their employees very little. They try to limit most employees to less than 40 hours a week so they are not seen as "Full Time". They try to avoid paying benefits, and avoid labor unions.

Reason 3. They drive many smaller retailers out of business with their unfair ability to get low cost products and how they treat their employees.

Reason 4. Most people will buy their stuff there anyway because they perceive that they save money, but they don't on most items, just a few loss leaders to get people in the store. Wal-Mart is ingenious by creating the mentality that you can get whatever you need at great prices all in one place.

I have no big problems with them. I don't like to shop there because it is too crowded and there are never enough lines open. In fact, they are really embracing the automated checkout system. I had to go there the other night and that was all that they had open.

Some people have an anti-corporation philosophy. Like a corporation is evil. They cannot explain why they think that corporations are evil. Some will point to some bad dealings that corporations have done in the past. However, if you look, you will see small business deal in just as bad stuff. There are crooked businessmen in all levels of business. There are single proprietorships that break the law twelve times a day before lunch.

You can definately see anti-corporate sentiment in the movies. People from corporations are always bad guys. I was watching "Dante's Peak" the other day and it has a corporate guy who is made out to be a jerk because he decides not to invest in an area that is about to be wiped out by a volcano. Just a little while later he is killed off.

Wal-Mart is a big company. They have the largest private computer system in the world. One of the reasons for their success. Some people say that Wal-Mart destroys smaller stores, but that is because of economics. The consumer goes to Wal-Mart to get a better price and better selection. The smaller stores go out of business because they cannot take care of the customers.

Where I grew up there were a bunch of stores that were operated by local people. Some book stores, some clothing stores, some specialty stores. Their prices were too horrible. They opened at 10 or 11. Quit at 5 and sometimes 4. They had no selection and they gave horrible customer assistance. Wal-Mart came to town and they started screaming about how Wal-Mart is destroying the small businesses. Wal-Mart did not destroy them. The small business owners did. The ones that succeeded were the ones that took care of the customers and specialized.

A lot of people decide to ignore that Wal-Mart provides a lot of jobs to people and it gives better prices than most stores. There is a reason why Wal-Mart makes money. It is because they take care of the customer.

Penn and Teller on Showtime have a show about Wal-Mart tomorrow night. It should be interesting.

Absolutly nothing in my opinion. I buy groceries, cleaners, prescriptions, everything there-except clothes-because they are so cheaply made. Other than that, Wal Mart is great. You have these people that hate Wal Mart for the fact they are importing stuff and some other things, but to each their own..if you want to save money, which most of us DO, then you shop at Wal Mart.

everything that says made in china is cheap crap and everything sold at wal-mart is made in china all wal-mart wants to do is sell this junk at the lowest prices possible and saving money anyway possible. Don't worry they can only fight off the union for so long. Be American buy American

I shop there for household supplies. I don't have a problem with it. They offer the best prices on laundry detergant, toilet paper, paper plates, etc. No one is forcing people to shop there or work there for that matter. So, I have no sympathy for people that complain about it. It's a matter of choice. If you don't like the way they treat employees, then don't work there. If you don't like the way they practice there business, then don't shop there. It's that simple. I shop were I get the most for my money. And right now, that place is Walmart. If other discount stores complain, then they need to lower their prices. I can get Tide detergant a dollare cheaper at Walmart compared to Kmart, Target, Wallgreens, etc.

It used to be higher quality stuff but since Sam Waltons son took over (he is now dead as well) it all went down hill. You may not remember but most things sold there were American made and now that most things are imported I wish they would bring that back.

Get on the internet and check out walmart watch. Read up on them. There's more there than I could tell you.
Employee abuse, to driving out the competition (we've seen that in several of our towns around here and in other states we've visited)
And, can you say "Chinese Import Shop?"...our manufacturing jobs are going out of the country because they apparently prefer the slave price labor of the asian countries.
