We don`t need both,maybe society in general has decided they go together I think that`s a cop out.

No we do not need both. You cant love and hate a person at the same time. Hate can turn to love and love can turn into hate.
Hate can turn into love when the person that you hate so much have occupied your thought, your energy, your time and feeling until you cant think of anybody else. Over time you will find you cant stop thinking about him and you will miss him if you dont see him or talk about him.
Love can turn to hate when the person you love so much have betrayed your trust and hurt you very badly.

We don't need both and I fail to see how they are connected. I love many people in many ways. I have never hated anyone.

Love and hate are just the two poles of the same rope.... you cant hate anybody if you ve never felt nothing for him/her; if for some reason you dont like someone you avoid or ignore him/her but not hate im/er .

It's related to what you value supreme and why, And then whether you own it, control it, or it eludes you.
If your mind is enslaved you will hate things that are free and love things that are also enslaved like you. The opposite is also true. I hate enslaved things. Freedom and what it takes to be a free mind is my supreme value.
