The types of planets in our solar system are divided into two categories: gas giants (Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune and Uranus) and terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars). The gas that makes up the gas giants (mostly helium and hydrogen) is incredibly dense and opaque. They reflect visible light but also emit infrared and X-rays. In terms of visibility, think of water steam or smoke...they are gases, but the particles in them make them visible, especially when light is shining through them.

Everything from Mercury to Mars is rocky and The remaining four from Jupiter out are gaseous. The gas giants are visible because the gas is not transparent like air. It's opaque and reflects light.
