My friend was petsitting for me while I've been out of town the last two weeks. I'm coming back on Friday but she just emailed me today saying that she's lost my spare key. My other pet has food bowls left around the house so she's fine but the fish of course doesn't and ate last on Monday and it's now Wednesday. I won't be there for two more days which would make it almost a week that the little fish will not have food. I'm really worried. I told her to keep looking for the key, and she is, but with her there's a good chance it's LOST indefinantly. How long can bettas go without eating? Does anyone know? I'm really thinking about having her husband break in through the window. Help Please!

Your fish should be fine, Most fish can go up to 10 days without food and be OK.

3 or 4 days isn't going to be a problem.

Good Luck.

Bettas are a very hardy fish. I would like to ask you the question of what kind of tank setup do you have him in?? I have two bettas in a 1.5 gallon tank and a 1/2 gallon tank. I left them last year for 5 days without food while I was on vacation and they were fine. I had a customer come into my store the other day and said he feeds his betta once a week and has had him for a long time. I do not recommend doing this all the time but once for in a while for a vacation or other reason they will do fine.

Since they will not be eating they will also be pooping LESS so your water will not have to be changed as quickly as if you were feeding him every day. I wouldn't worry about water quality too much, but make sure you change 20-30% of his water as soon as you get back home just to be safe.

Good luck.. I'm pretty sure he'll be fine.

I have a beta fish and easter will be three years that i have had him. they are pretty hardy fish and can take alot, even bad water. I have left him without eatting for several days and he has been fine. just last weekend he ate on thursday and i did not feel him till sunday night because i was out of town. No need to break a window over feeding him relax he should be fine. I ussually feed him everyday or every other day. you arent suppose to feed them daily i have been told.

He'll be fine for two more days, bettas can go without food for over 10 days.

Well, I would start worrying because of the water, not the food. Do you have a filter in the tank? If not, chances are, nothing is going to save him because by now the ammonia in his poo would have killed him.

If not(hopefully) he might make it. They can go for a short time without food but this may be too long.

Sorry if you find that he is dead. I know how it feels to come home after someone was supposed to take care of your pet and you find out its dead. In this case, she just lost the key. In my case, she just hated the pet.

Good luck either way.

They can go without food for a long time. The exact time is not known. He will eat the uneaten food in his bowl which has not decayed (if any)

Your fish should probably be okay if he had been eating well for awhile. Chances are there are still a couple of pellets at the bottom, so if he gets really hungry he wil find them. No worries.....

Tell your husband to break into ur house because my fish only lasted a day without food. They are a captive fish and will only survive long periods of time in the wild.
