Ok, so i want to stop smoking but i am afriad of the weight gain that often times goes along with it. I eat a diet well rounded with whole-grains and fruit and rarely splurge on unhealthy foods, i am at a perfect weight for my heigth but i have heard that once you stop smoking you gain twenty pounds or more. It took me along time to take off twenty pounds a year ago and i do not want to put them back on. Any ideas on how to stop the weight gain process?

I wanted to answer one of your questions cause your answer was so helpful. The Wellbutrin has been very helpful to me I went from a pack a day for 2 yrs to 2 a day for 2 months then after 2 mo. none and I have not gained any weight. I really like it. You can do the gum but that is costly. Good luck.

That isn't necessarily true and it shouldn't keep you from quitting! Yes it's true most people will gain about 10 lbs. It's because you're replacing one thing for another - smoking for food plus it keeps your mouth and hands busy. You need to find something you can do to occupy your hands like crochet, knitting, etc. and either chew a lot of sugarless gum or find a hard candy - sugarless also - that you like and keep it in your mouth all the time! I'm a smoker and want to quit but gaining a few pounds is not my concern, it's the actual quitting part lol!! You're better off being 10-20 lbs overweight than being a smoker and losing that small amount of weight is a piece of cake! Don't let that fear stop you, if can quit then do it!!!! =)

Good luck!

People gain weight after they stop smoking because the replace the oral fixation by eating more. They also don't realize how much smoking curbs the appetite.

If you don't want to gain weight, you should up your exercise during the transition, or chew a whole lot of gum!

It's not always true that you gain weight when you quit smoking and since you don't sit around eating junk food all day it is highly unlikely that you will gain weight at all, yes it is true that some people feel the need to fill the void where the cig. used to be with food but as long as you are making healthy choices such as raw veggies or fruit you have nothing to worry about... AND GOOD FOR YOU FOR QUITTING!!!!!!

Don't replace smoking with eating--many grab a piece of candy or something instead of a cigarette. Find something else to do, take a walk, drink water, chew gum, eat a celery stick, find what works for you, but just don't let it be bad foods. Maybe increase your exercise time, just in case. And remember, even if you do gain a few pounds, that's still much healthier than smoking.

Ask your doctor about Welbutrin to help quit smoking. It also works to curb your appetite in some people.
