IBM is not losing money.
You are referring to the Lenovo brand which IBM sold to a Chinese company but kept approximately 15% ownership.

IBM Worldwide is not losing money & in fact had a net income of almost 10 billion dollars last year.

"2006 year-end from continuing worldwide operations : "

Revenue:
$91.4 billion

Net income:
$9.4 billion

Total assets:
$103.2 billion

I think you have to go beyond just PCs. IBM has a wide variety of business operations, a vast array of software as well as many outsourced IT operations.

I'm afraid 'big blue' had a hard time adapting to the decrease in main-frame operations which it dominated for years. There are still many main-frames around but the rate of replacement has dropped drastically cutting deeply into their income. They went from virtually no competition to some very strong competition and were not prepared. This was mostly due to an arrogance developed from domination. The corporate structure was not capable of adapting quickly and they lost ground.

Poor business decisions. IBM has lagged behind for some years in the PC business.
