I'm not entirely sure, but I believe it's written in scripture that Christ was welcomed by the people with palm branches. Whether or not this is accurate, who knows... I'm the kind of person that does not consider the Bible word for word historical fact when it comes to the minor details. Aside from all that, it's tradition.

Palm branches were originally waved at the crowing of a new king. So when Jesus rode triumphantly into Jerusalem and the crowd waved palm branches, they were pronouncing him the King of Israel by their actions.

Palms grow pretty easily in desert land, and were often used to make rooves on houses and baskets and such. Just readily available, but also had a political connotation.

Ummm...those two trees are indigenous to Israel so the children running behind were probably just using what was available to them...and the palms are regal looking and they were waving in the KING of KINGS!!! :-)
