Most people are unaware that the meat they eat comes from very unpleasant conditions. Intensively farmed animals live in often squalid conditions (pigs in sowstalls in massive shed requiring workers to wear breathing apparatus to enter), chickens eating other dead decaying chikens in massive unventilated sheds, slaughter houses run by huge unethical companies - immigrant workers exploited, drug use widespread. Massive environmental damage caused by bulk feed lots.
Its kind of scary when you think about the meat industry.
Perhaps going hunting and shooting your own meat is actually a better, cleaner way?

Heavens yes! I live near a Swift Co. processing plant. It may smell terrible on the outside but the inside is worse in parts like the kill floor, the gut room.... I'm a professional butcher and work with other butchers that have side jobs at small plants. I hear all their stories and some are wild. Regardless of the smells or sights there are very strict federal laws regarding sanitation and safety. Also there is a much higher risk of disease when hunting animals that haven't been vaccinated and fed reasonably clean water. The risk in part comes from handling the carcass and whatever critters are on it from various pathogens and critters in the meat or guts.

Not all slaughter houses operate like that so maybe people shoud instead support the ones who dont. The problem with hunting is that when people hunt things they tend to upset the ecological balance where as slaughter houses breed for slaughter.

I think we should all just become vegetarians...much more healthy and humane.

And if thats not appealing to you then you should try to support movements for animal rights and make sure when you spend your money that the companies adhere to some kind of ethical code. I know that is unrealistic and difficult to do most of the time but at least try when you can.

I've been to the Perdue chicken plant in Mobile, Alabama. My stepfather was repairing one of the dry ice machines they have. The place reeked inside of rotting chicken, there was skin and blobs of fat all over the place. It was a rainy day, and when I went outside I actually stepped on a huge piece of chicken fat, fell down, and busted my @ss on the concrete. I still eat chicken to this day. It's one of my favorites because it's so versatile.

I don't like wild game, so unless it becomes legal to shoot cows and chickens (Doubt it ever will--I'm pretty sure the farmers would be a *tad* upset about that.), I'm going to continue to eat beef, chicken and pork from the "squalid" conditions in which they live. :)

I agree with you. People should know the origin of their meat, and insist on good welfare standards - which produce better carcasses anyway.

The trouble is, it isn't cheap, and most would rather not know.

I think controlled hunting is a perfectly acceptable alternative.

Would, Have, Do. Meat is tasty. Besides you think "nature" is clean? Dude spend a month camping in the wilderness and watch what animals eat and do it isn't very "clean" as you thinl.

Sure I would, because I DO know where it comes from. My question to you is, have YOU been to those facilities? Don't believe everything peta tells you and stop being followers of that cult.
