Sorry, I'm not sure I understand your question.
Do you mean, "Should I give something to local people when I travel in their country?" or do you mean, "Should I BRING something back for my family/friends when I travel?" or do you mean something different?
If you go to a poor country, you will almost certainly be mobbed by people (especially children) begging for a handout. I strongly discourage this because once you begin, how can you stop? And if you give something to one, the others will follow you with more determination. I would suggest instead that you make a contribution to the local school or hospital, or, perhaps better, make a contribution to UNICEF or the Red Cross. Unfortunately, most poor countries also have corrupt governments (I know this is a terribly sweeping generalization), so I would also discourage you from lining the pockets of local politicians and/or police.
If you are asking about souvenirs for family & friends, then I would say, absolutely yes! When I travel, I like to buy things made of cloth [batik goods (Indonesia) or furoshiki (Japan), for example], because they represent another culture in a beautiful way, they can be relatively inexpensive, they are unbreakable, and they are easy to pack in your suitcase.
If this doesn't answer your question, perhaps you could ask it a different way or give more details.
