I love York! It's such a quaint town with cobblestone streets in the city center and there is a lot of history to see (York Minster, Castle Museum, etc). If you go, but sure to do a Ghost Trail tour one night. There are a few different groups that run them, but all of the guides are quite funny and it's a very enjoyable way to hear some "scary" stories of the old city. Unfortunately, nothing is cheap in the UK, but I didn't find York to be quite as pricey as a lot of other cities (like London or Edinburgh). By the way, the Best Western Monkbar hotel is right outside the city gates and the rooms are very generously sized. Plus the staff is very friendly and helpful. Hope you find a good place to check out and have a great visit!

Oxford. Lovely history, all the colleges...just generally a very pretty town with lots to do.
Bristol. Mix of historical and modern with plenty to do and see.
Brighton. There's the beach, the pier, the lanes...great shopping, lots to do, plus seaside air...
