cubic yards is a unit of volume. tons is a unit of weight. to convert tons to cubic yard you must know the density of the material being measured.

It depends upon the material; a half ton of lead wouldn't take up nearly as much space as, say, a half ton of feathers :-)

Depends on the density. More cubic yards if you are talking about something lightweight like bark mulch. Fewer if you are talking iron ingots.
