You need to be more specific, as to which group of pioneers you are talking about. Pioneer (from Old French peon "foot soldier") may refer to:people who traveled west from all around the world.

So which group are you talking about?

If you are talking about the settlers of the west, again, you need to be more detailed in your question. There were those that went to California right away because of the Gold Rush. There are the Mormon Pioneers. There are those that headed west during the Great Depression. There are those that settled the midwest when the government was giving away land. Etc.

Specifics are needed to give you a good answer.

Depends on what pioneers you are talking about...but, most people would be thinking of the pioneers crossing the great Plains, before the trains took over long distance travel in the late 1860's.
They started usually in St. Joseph, Mo, west of St. Louis. They then went to The Sweetwater river in Wyoming, where they had crossed the Con'tl divide. They then turned either southwest to California, or northeast to Oregon.
Travel was at first along the Platte river, where it not only marked the route, but provided water, green grass, and firewood. Travel took 3 to 5 months, about 8 miles a day.

sorry, but we need a bit more information---what time period are you asking about? it could be the pioneers that moved from Pennsylvania to the southeast or it could be the ones that settled the western part of the U.S.

That's a pretty vague question, but start off by reading GIANTS IN THE EARTH by O.E. Rolvaag.
