it was found that during thermo nuclear reactions the total mass of the reactants was more than the total mass of the products formed. this has been explained by the equation of Einstein E= mc2 , where E is energy released, m is mass difference and c2 the square of speed of light. the equation says that during thermo nuclear reactions, a part of the mass of the reactants gets converted into energy. this energy today is manifested in the nuclear fission and fusion reactions. you obviously know about the Hiroshima mishap. it was caused by the dropping of an uranium bomb. artificially producing energy is called artificial radioactivity. teh energy thus released in the case is calculated by taking the product of the mass difference or loss and square of the speed of light. by this equation yhe divide between mass and enefrgy has been bridged. Mass and energy are thus inter-convertible. the mass may be very small but the energy released in the case is extremely large.

An amount of matter 'm' kg can be converted to an amount of energy 'E' Joules, and vice versa. The ratio for this conversion is the square of the speed of light in metres per second.
One might immediately think that this is only true because of the arbitrarily chosen units, but the units themselves are in fact all directly related.

m stands for mass, c (which is a speed), L is length, and t is Time,the dimension of c2 is [ L ]2/[ T ]2, therefore, dimension of mc2 is [ M ][ L ]2/[ T ]2 which is the same as the dimension of the energy.

(right now you are probably blank, but thats the answer am sure) *smiles*

It's just the way nature works. It says that energy and mass are equivalent. Mass can be turned into energy and vice versa.

a little bit of mass (m) can be converted into A LOT of energy (E). c is the speed of light, which is a huge number and it is squared ...
