Click view then status bar to make sure that it is visible. You can also right click on the page and click properties, and if it is protected by SSL it will show this. I would not deal with any site that lets you input personal information without encryption. Even when you login to Yahoo it is encrypted.

If the bank is running an unsecured webpage, call them up and tell them you'll deal with them when they make your communication secure.

Depends if you need the service they are offering enough to risk the possibility of information theft.

Depends if you think a bank that runs an unsecured website will treat your confidential data with due respect for security.

It could be that you already have a virus or trojan and you are being forwarded to a mockup webpage. If it has a certificate look at it and see who it was issued to and who issued it. Granted you can fake a certificate it doesn't hurt to take a look.

that lock is 1 way of determining if the connection is 'secure' another way is to look at the actual address bar: which will be: https:// indicating the same thing.
transmiting without this feature (SSL) is risky; it might not go to the actual place you intended.
