We were in florida when we saw a ten minute long flock of pelicans going north just parallel to the shore...Why were the birds flying out and where to?In responce to what?
Weather was good even though thunderstorms did come that night.

Pelicans and other birds are good at following each other, and at following schools of fish that we can't see from above the surface of the water. At the time the video was shot, it would have been fairly close to sunset, and birds to have a habit of returning in flocks to their nesting places at sunset. It could have been a response to the imminent change in the weather, as well.

It is on migration, not escaping. Migration is an annual ritual for birds, butterfly etc., During winter season due to non availability of food and water, they migrate to a pre determined destination, where they get plenty of food, water and safety. They breed there, during their stay, take care of young ones. Once the season is over they fly back to their native place. They are mostly guided by earths magnetic feild, and also by inbuilt memory. They come to the same place next season, this repeats.
