Common courtesy is needed in the WORLD. Too many folks jump to negative conclusions about the behavior of others. This leads to misunderstandings and the development of factions. Once trust and understanding have been breached, a relationship of any sort (business, diplomatic, romantic, family) is difficult to recover.

Common courtesy smoothes the way for a lot of things. Saying "I'm sorry" even when it wasn't strictly your fault, or showing appreciation when someone helps you out, are small things that go a long way toward building relationships. When it's time for the difficult conversations to take place (in business, that might be performance issues, layoffs, etc.) having a store of goodwill in place makes them a little easier.

Plus who wants to work with a bunch of rude, obnoxious people?

Absolutely. Common courtesy should be the basis of all human communication. Without it, there remains only violence or isolation.

In business, there is an element of trust behind every transaction. Trust is an element of common courtesy. Otherwise, you would have to use threats.

Yes of course common courtesy is needed in business. Customers can shop anywhere and do business anywhere and if they are not happy with business they will not return. Most businesses that depend on return customers try to apply this and businesses like motor vehilcle department DMV that are not concerned do not offer much courtesy.

Definitely. Case in point, my husband owns a business which was started 3 years ago this July, the company he used to work for was taken over by extremely pompous people who had the 'confidence' to state to my husband that he'd be lucky if he was in business a year because they had the market sewn up and he'd never make it because of that.

Well, almost three years later and because my husband is incredible in how he and his staff treat clients...he has, without even trying, taken on 4 of the other companies clients and hired 3 members of their staff who couldn't stand the politics at the other company, others are waiting in the wings for the opportunity to also work with my husband ... each and everyone citing that the reason they are coming to him is because he treats them as tho their business deserves the best. These contracts will put my husband's business over the 1million $ mark at the end of their fiscal year. Meanwhile the other company is losing clients left and right and all of them are now coming to my husband for quotes and stating he'll have all of their business. He is now negotiating to purchase larger facilities and he showed a profit the very first year because of the way he deals with clients.

Courtesy matters a great deal and negative word of mouth carries a lot of weight with clients/customers.
