I believe it has to do with a passage in the Christian scriptures about people waving palm branches, and placing them in the road for his donkey to walk on when Jesus rode in to Jerusalem. I've often wondered about it, as the only time the Jewish people *traditionally* wave palm branches is at Sukkot, which is a harvest festival in the fall.

the people of jerusalem laid palm branches for Jesus' donkey to walk on when he came into town.. so the donkey wouldn't have to walk on the ground. No red carpets back then!

When Jesus rode the mule into the town, the people of the town laid down palm leaves for the mule to walk upon. Jesus was humble, riding a mule.............and the town's people wanted to make the walk for Jesus softer, easier. That is why they laid down the large palm leaves.
