Quick answer:

federalists wanted a strong federal government
anti-fedarlists wanted the state gov'ts to be stronger than the federal gov't.

They couldn't agree, so they split into different groups to vote for the candidates that supported their views. So political parties emerged.

This is a brief answer, but there is much more involved. I don't have time or space to go into more detail.

The Federalists wanted to keep the Constitution strong while the Anti-Federalists opposed the Constitution. The parties were formed, like Now and Then, lets say Republicans were the Federalists and Democratic were the Anti-Federalists so basically it's for elections today but it was for a major debate back then and they were formed in a debate like I said.

There was a struggle between those who wanted the majority of the power and decision making left to the states (anti federalists) and those who wanted the majority of power to be in the hands of a strong central government (Federalists). Thus the Federalist Party of George Washington was formed and its antithesis the Democratic-Republican Party of Thomas Jefferson.
