yes it could b done...i have done it b4 an i dun tink it will dooo any harm 2 da pc or notebook....

I think you can. The laptop and monitor will adjust to the new settings. You would be better off getting a monitor switch though. "kvm switch". This allows you to use the same keyboard / mouse (ps2 one) and monitor for both computers. Check them out on ebay.

You should turn off the desktop when you unplug the monitor....

Laptops have a button that needs to be pressed to activate the external monitors plug.....

Yes there really is no danger in doing that as long as your video board is seated and secured well(which unless you messed with it, it is).
