So im diabetic and 38 weeks pregnant. I every so often have growth ultra sounds to see how big the baby is. About 3 weeks ago they did one and they said she was close to 6lbs. Today I go and they say about 6 lbs 4 ozs. SO they are basically saying she only has gained about 4-8 ozs in 3 weeks. Has anyone ever had a growth ultra sound, and then deliver and the weight be completly off?? Please!!

Ultrasounds are a give or take of 2 pounds. They said my first was going to be close to 10 pounds. Well, she was 7lbs 5 oz. at 38.5 weeks when she was born. The second one they said she was going to be a little over 9 pounds. She was 6lbs 15oz at birth (38 weeks). I had 2 or 3 US's with the first and about 15 with the second. The last one being only 2 weeks before she was born. So they really really vary in weight as far as I'm concerned.

I think the weight rates are just a guess. I have 4 kids and every single one of mine were off. And it was a different dr. each time.

With my first, I was told 6 and 1/2 pounds. She was 7 lbs.11 oz.
With my 2nd, I was told he was around 7 and 1/2 to 8 lbs and he ended up 9 lbs. 13 oz.
My 3rd was 9 lbs. 10 oz and my 4th was also 9 lbs. 13 oz. (The drs. thought around 8 with them as well)

Try not to worry. I am sure your baby will gain a bit more before she is born. And if not, 6 pounds is a healthy weight.
Congrats and Good Luck!

I'm 30 weeks pregnant with twins and have had 1 u/s every 4 weeks so far... I will begin 2/month starting next Friday. They have all been "growth checks." While they can be off - my last u/s with my previous pregnancy "showed" a 7lb baby, and she came out 9lbs 6.6oz 3 days later - they do hold some truth. The growth is more than likely being monitored on a growth chart to see where the baby is, has been, and could/should be. Both of the girls in me are different weights, but one has significantly dropped off of her growth curve, prompting non-stress tests 2 times a week and the u/s 2 times a month to make sure she's not completely dropping off the chart.

They ARE estimates, but -rest assured- if something wasn't right, you'd be in for a bunch of visits and a ton of stress. Dr.'s aren't going to risk a mal-practice suit just so they can soosh you out the door.

Yes, When I was around 38 weeks pregnant with my first child I had an ultrasound and they told me the baby was 7 pounds. When I delivered a week later the baby was 8 pounds 5 ounces.

My sister was told her son was 6 1/2 pounds. She delivered that night.. he was 8 1/2 pounds. They leave room for error of a pound either way. Don't worry too much. As long as she is growing you are doing well... Oh and btw.. I got diagnosed with gestational diabetes and anyone that has to deal with this daily... You are my hero!!! Wow.. the amazing things people do that nobody notices. Good luck and congrats on your baby!!!

it is so wierd how doctors know these things. my doctor told me how much he thought my baby would weigh just by lookin at me and how much weight i gained and he was just about right, he was only 3 ounces off.

they are really only estimates aand can't tell you for sure exaclty how much your baby weighs. if the docs were concerned they would tell you :)
