New Delhi, Mar. 6 : An estimated Rs.58,000 crores worth of food items are wasted every year at the various stages of handling after harvesting.

This was stated by Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Subodh Kant Sahai in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

According to the report of Rabo India Finance Limited the wastage occurs due to fragmented farming, lack of adequate post-harvest infrastructure such as lack of cold chain facilities, transportation and proper storage facilities, Sahai said.

The loss due to wastage could be reduced by a developed food processing industry, strengthening of the post-harvest infrastructure and filling the gaps in the supply chain, he added.
