But totally unacceptable for two men. I would have thought in this day and age anything goes.

Because women don't lose anything by being touchy-feely with another woman, whereas a man "loses" his masculinity when he dances with another guy and seems "effeminate" (note the inverted commas, this is not my opinion, but how people in general would see it.)

In this day and age, although alot of things have seen modernisation, alot of issues also lag behind as far as public acceptance goes.

Anyway, it is not TOTALLY unacceptable in Singapore, infact it is quite common here, unless you are talking about a two men dancing to a romantic ballad... then you would be getting alot of attention.

Dancing together does not MEAN romantic involvement, but it does imply it very strongly.

I guess, society is more open to accepting homosexual women, to homosexual men. Why? Because homosexuality in men is rarely seen publicly and still very much shunned upon. But thanks to the media, literature, celebrity behaviour and the internet, homosexuality amongst women has more exposure and has had this exposure for a much more significant amount of time.

Maybe not now, but I'm sure in the near future, it will be closer to the situation of "anything goes".

It goes back to the old days when a girl *had* to have a dance partner (not like now where they just choose up sides). If there weren't enough men to go round (and for some reason there usually weren't) it was considered OK for 2 girls to dance together, but since balls and dances were used as a way to start courtship, 2 men together was not done.

As a lot of men don't like to dance, women dancing together kinda makes sense. Also a group of girls out on a girls night out will often want to dance, but not be looking to encourage strange guys. Guys out together rarely want to dance, and if they do, they'll look for a female.

There shouldn't be anything wrong with two guys dancing.

But in who's eye's are, a man can find it OK for two woman, but not two men, the same goes for two women having sex, most men would not turn away, but if it was two men, they would complain
