Parents of students generally oppose their kids dating, until they're done with their education. Many students date anyway, and don't tell their parents. They can go on dates just like Americans go on dates, like going bowling, out to eat, to karaoke, or to each others' houses, if their parents know and don't mind them dating.

In my experience, dating is a relatively private thing. As far as family and especially parents are concerned. If you date a Japanese, they stereotypically won't "Bring you home to meet mom and dad" until you are very serious or are already talking about getting married. Now, that is not to say that everyone does it that way, but just in my own experience and according to the experience of many of the foreigners I know who have dated Japanese.
Japanese who date Japanese are probably a little more secure with the fact that their parents will accept their boy/girl friend so they bring them home earlier. According to my Japanese students.
Dating activities are basically the same as anywhere else: Movies, Karaoke, driving, parking, eating, etc.
