I am very worried about my mate, she has suffered from an eating disorder for a long time now and i don't know how to help her, we both would love to talk to anyone that has recovered from this terrible illness, i want to know what i can do to help and she would just like to be able to talk through all she is feeling with a person who knows from personal experiences what she is going through and feeling and to know that this can be beat, that there is light at the end of a very dark and confusing tunnel.

The first piece of advice that I can give you is to make sure you are comfortable about being there thru everything. It will not be easy for her to figure out how to get out of that tunnel and it can be very painful. It is not a straight line to recovery; there will be ups and downs and you cannot get mad and give up on her in the middle. You will hurt her worse if you drop out in the middle than it would in the beginning. It is an all or nothing situation for you. Recovery from anorexia teaches you who your real friends are.

Another thing that I learned when I was trying to start my recovery was that most of the GOOD professionals (therapists, techs in hospitals, nurses, etc) that work with eating disorders are in recovery for an eating disorder.

If she isn't ready for a hospital yet, you can call around for an aftercare meeting. Looking up programs in her area on the internet is good. If it is difficult to find something that way call 1-800-931-2237 which is a referral and information line for NEDA which is the National Eating Disorder Association. They also can provide information for you. Aftercare meeting are set up for individuals in all stages of recovery. Some meetings will let you sit in, if you are comfortable with that. The moderator is a professional who can give both of you a better idea of what specific help she is needing at the point she is at.

Things do get better and there is a light at the end of the tunnel, I promise...

You should take her to see a doctor immediately. Eating disorder can damange her body inside and out for good. If this goes on for a long time she can end up with a kidney failure at the lightest case and in worse case, her whole body can shutdown.
