A combination of heat and time. The area surrounding the spark plug is one of the hottest parts of the engine. The hottest is the exhaust valve which can see temperatures over 1000 degrees Farenheit! Valve cover gaskets are relatively simple to replace with an average set of mechanics tools. You are fortunate that your vehichle is still running well with relatively few problems at 150K mi.

Well your problem is in the drivetrain and you need to change all the filters or all of the gaskets will explode. As for the sparkplug yo should get some windshield wiper fluid and give it a bath. Make sure the heat shield is hot and working properly. I've done this a million times your car will run like new.

Spark plug gaskets don't go bad and valve cover gaskets break from drying out and cracking usually, its normal.

you might have worn valve guides or dried valve seals depending on the material of the gasket and the car is high miles used a lot so the gaskets are just probaly worn, spliting, and cracking.

Gee, how long do you expect a rubber gasket, constantly bombarded by hot oil, in a high heat area, to last?
I'd say go have new gaskets installed, or do it yerself, if you know how! Gee! 150,000 miles!!??!!!
