I don't specialize in making them, but I do sew. In most form fiting garments, in order for it to be form fitting then you need the measurements that matter. These would usually be:

Bust
Torso, or under bust
Shoulder to bust, if you're not going with a strapless
Natural waist
Hips
Waist to Hip length
Hip to floor length
Overall length, from top to bottom.

It seems like a lot, but it really only takes a few minutes for someone that's skilled to do this. Of course you can give or take a few of these, depending on where you go. If it's someplace like David's Bridal, they probably won't do all of these. If it's someplace a little better, then most, if not more than these will be done.

It depends what the style of dress is.
If it is strapless then there will be a lot less measurements as they dont have to bother with your arms and shoulders.

Basic measurements would be bust (over and under measurements) waist and hips (although if it has a large skirt sometimes it doesn't matter that much as it skims your hips)

They should also measure your height so the dresses all fall to the same length (so maybe from shoulder to knee depending on the length)

Your Bust, Waist and hips. Also if the person is over 5'7" or 5'8" then they will have to measure extra length depending on the height of the heel being worn.

Tell the bride comgrates and you must be pretty special to be one of her brides maids.
