I've played a number of MMORPG's and only liked a few.
Monthly Subscription:
Everquest:
First MMORPG I've ever played. Definately not the same as it use to be. This game shaped the way all people play now. Its all about getting the best gear and to reach the highest lvl the fastest. This game is very high lvl oriented now.
Everquest 2:
Very good game still. You can reach the highest lvl without ever having to group (excluding a few classes). You can lvl as quick or as slow as you want. This game is more for the casual gamer who just wants to get on for a couple hours a week. Great game in my oppinion.
Final Fantasy 11:
I don't know what I was thinking playing these long necked bastards. I did not like the game at all.
World of Warcraft:
If I want to play with my friend's 8 year old brother who is in a nice top end guild I'll play this. This game is to easy. Everything is pretty much spelled out for you on where to go and what to do.
Dungeons and Dragons Online:
I thought this was a pretty good game. The highest lvl is 10, however, it takes a little while to get there while getting new skill and spells in between lvls so you are never bored about playing the same thing over and over again. You can find many people playing at all ranges of lvls. I stopped playing because I started Oblivion.
No Monthly Subscription
Guild Wars:
It was an alright game until you did your 4th quest and realized that it was going to be in the same area for the majority of the game. The areas and enemies are very repititive and boring.
Runescape:
I think my friend's brother who plays WoW can make a better game than this. I will leave it at that.
Silkroad:
For being a totally free game (free download and no montly subscriptions) this is a great game. You can pick from a variety of races and can custimize how your char. fights as you advance in lvl. Plus it is a great looking game also.
So my suggestion would be to check out Silkroad since it is completely free.
If you do like Diablo type games I would highly suggest Titan's Quest. An all around fun game.

From my personal perspective, I would suggest some good as follow. You can find their fansites from mmosite, such as http://sof.mmosite.com http://9dragon.mmosite.com etc.
Scions of fate: http://fate.netgame.com (cute & popular mmorpg)
9 Dragons: http://9dragons.acclaim.com (ultimate action mmorpg)
Corum Online: http://corum.gpotato.com (brand new 3D mmorpg, look nice)
Silkroad Online: http://www.silkroadonline.net (maybe one of the best free mmorpg, but huge grind unless you buy the virtual currency)
