I work in an office where I regularly receive poorly written memorandums. Everything from no commas, all caps, no date, etc. I received a memo where diagnosis was spelled diagnoses. I quietly pointed out to the writer that is was spelled incorrectly. She insisted that either way is ok. I have searched and don't find "diagnoses". Anyone know the answer?

You have a lot of different questions in this-I will try to answer but e mail me if I miss something important. First let me clarify that home oxygen is measured in liters per minute. Room air itself is 21% oxygen, so you can see that 2% would not be adequate to sustain life. 2 L/M gives you about 28%. As for travel-most DMEs will give smaller lighter D cylinders with a special regulator that gives a pulsed dose vs. continous flow. The O2 only squirts out during inhalation, so the tank lasts longer. This is helpful to use with the larger E tanks as well, because you can take fewer of them. There are other systems available but it isn't so much what the doctor prescribes as what her insurance will cover. Most patients on only 2 L/M do well with a pulse dose and D tanks. All this requires is turning a light tank wrench and a knob-with practice it will become second nature. Changing the regulator is a bit harder but if she will have someone with her to assist on longer trips it shouldn't be a problem. For a long trip I definitely recommend taking the concentrator along. Some DMEs will arrange a rental if you will be staying in one location for the duration. The coughing is problematic-fibrosis typically does not respond to bronchodilators. An inhaled steroid might be helpful. No doctor is going to want to prescribe codiene over the long term-she could try OTC dextromethorphan. It will probably take some trial and error to work out a medication regimen tailored specifically to her needs. An anxiolytic is certainly reasonable given the unexpected diagnosis of a chronic illness. The reason you can't get a more specific life expectancy is because it is highly variable with this disease. The fact that she is 70 without any other medical problems is very hopeful, and her body type is favorable to doing well-excess weight just puts that much more workload on the cardiopulmonary system. Pulmonary rehab can be very helpful but it is mainly about increasing strength and endurance-with your description of her regular exercise habits I think she is probably in good shape already! Given these factors, I suspect the principle cause of death for this lady could most reasonably be called "old age". Most people with this diagnosis have multiple other diseases that contribute to their death-other lung disease, heart disease, kidney failure, etc. As with us all, though, eventually the body just wears out. For your loved one the fibrosis will certainly play a part but just the fact that she is 70 is more significant in my opinion. As much as we would like to have our dear ones around us forever that isn't nature's way. The situation does look very optimistic in this case and if you work out a good medication regimen I think it will be easy to maintain the lady's quality of life.

Diagnoses is the plural of diagnosis.

Her spelling is correct if she intended to use the plural. If she was going for the singular, she's wrong.

diagnosis -- singular
diagnoses -- plural

While others have been quick to point out that the plural of memorandum is memoranda, and not memorandums, it seems that the use of "memorandums" has become sufficiently frequent that the word has essentially gone legit, earning its place in pubs such as Merriam Websters. (Nonetheless, it *is* true that people who are interested in good grammar and good spelling look down on the use of "memorandums" over "memoranda" -- I know the editors and journalists where I worked would have scoffed -- and if you are going to take the position with others that you know better you may want to keep that in mind.) Also, your use of the word "spelled" is correct -- some verbs, and "spell" is one of them, have both regular and irregular past tenses. For "spell," either "spelt" or "spelled" would be correct. You may well know all of this already. But in case you didn't, well....there it is.

"Diagnoses" is the plural form of the word "diagnosis", so only one can be correct at a time, depending on whether it is used in a plural or singular context.

Yes; as No 1 character says, '...is' is singular and '...es' is plural.

Also, while you're at it, be careful about being 'too smart' because I think the real plural of 'memorandum' is 'memoranda', not 'memorandums' ... but I have not checked it, and leave myself open for correction there.

I believe, for instance, that the plural of "phenomenon" is 'phenomena', but, again, neither have I checked that.
So, just don't be too ready to criticize people's lingo; occasionally, we can find ourselves euchared ... or is that 'euchred' ... or ...
