Why can't people accept that there are some problems that just can't be fixed?

Because to not try...lets the opposition win. To do nothing shows acceptance of something, which is not always the case.

Because that seems so hopeless. As human beings, we are so proud of our ability to fix things. But at some point, you have to admit that it isn't fixable and walk away.

I have to add that it also matters what's at stake. Is is a life or death issue, or a bike you can't fix? The more serious the problem, the more we are likely to keep at it.

Because it is not true, our very nature as humans is to explore and apply. Knowing this, we have a tendancy to take on any problem no matter how impossible it seems. Without this we would accomplish nothing. Think about if the creators of math looked at two stones and said "I don't know how to got around this problem, it can't be fixed". It is fixing the impossible problems that gives us the highest pay offs.

...if we all had the answers to this question silver?...we'd all be living a dream of a lifestyle. It's just gonna be a fact of life that some people simply will resist feeling good about themselves and others around themselves too. This is why we have therapists and stuff honestly...to correct the bad thinking and behaviors we create for ourselves. I simply tell people to live in their moment...cause moments will simply pass you by...in just simply a moment. We are all responsible for our own happiness and dissatisfaction. It is our own creation of which we've all made for ourselves really. Find the good and positive stuff that keeps you thinking clearly?....In that you'll find the cat is at the end of this tail. Too bad drugs have to sometimes take the place of good psychology though. We'll never really know the true person that's on these mind altering chemicals. Drugs sometimes can calm people down to somewhat function reasonably in society...but it'll absolutely take the starch out of ones creative thinking abilities directly. Dangerous people need to be induced in order to keep them from harming themselves and others unfortunately. That's simply one of life's little mysteries that keep therapists and psychologists in business truly. Find your own good thinking and run with it. Nobody else is in charge of your own thinking alternatively.
