Ok so I gotta do some team work over the net for uni. I get a cheap litle $14 microphone, load up sound recorder or audacity and can't get the damn thing to record. the package came with no instructions since you should just plug it in.

I've checked the sound volumes and everything is up what else could it be? or did I just get stuck with a broken mic

Couple of things to double check. 1st is the mic muted? even with the volume up if it is muted then you are out of luck. 2nd, did you plug it into the mic input or the aux input? I know with audacity you need to be plugged into the aux input. Maybe you need to change the input for the mic. Hope this helps.

The mic is usually muted by default....

Double click the volume icon in the bottom right corner...

click on options, then properties...

place a checkmark in the microphone box, press OK...

now uncheck the MUTE microphone box....
