If you buy the drive retail, it will come packaged with the necessary software to help you do that. There will be a utility that you can use to clone the old drive to the new.

If you buy OEM (which is cheaper), it may not come packaged with the utility, but you can download it free from the manufacturer's website.

Well that depends on the reason why you want or need a bigger hard drive. The only way to duplicate or copy hard drive format, program, and registry settings is to buy a hard drive duplicator program such as Power Quest Drive Image 7.0 Or whatever the latest version is. But what I was getting at originally is, if all is happening is that you are running out of hard drive space, why not just install another hard drive as a storage drive, becuase you can also install more programs on this drive as well, or try an external hard drive.

Providing that your XP installation is OK why don't you consider getting a USB drive. Much easier to fit just plug and play. You can get a 250 gig for less than £60. You could free up space on your existing drive by moving your music and photos across to the new drive. It's also handy for back up, you do back up don't you? the number of people on Q/A who ask how they can get their files back after a hard drive crash is amazing. Hope this helps.

Why not install a second slave hard drive? You will not have to reinstall all your large programs.
