A friend told me he had received a e-mail telling him he had won a lottery in yahoo, I told him it sounded like a scam, and I think it is a way of people stealing your identity and getting into your bank account.
What do you guys think?

Several million people have received that email. It is a scam.

If he tries to collect, they'll tell him that he needs to pay a courier fee or taxes up front or some other fee. They'll ask him to send some money Western Union or with a money order. He'll send the money and they'll pocket it and that is the last he'll hear from them and they won't be sending any half million any time soon.

If they do send him a check, it is very likely forged. They'll ask him to pay the taxes or whatever fee they're asking for out of that initial check. He'll deposit the forged check in his bank and thinking that he has enough to cover the fees, he'll wire them the fee. Problem is, the forged check will bounce about 3 weeks later and his bank will take the money out of his account.

It's a scam. Just google lottery scams and you'll find a million variations of the various lottery scams out there.

It is a scam and I think EVERYONE On the planet has gotten at LEAST one.

Yahoo has no lottery, your friend didn't enter a lottery and all he's going to win is an empty bank account and a ton of legal problems.

It's a scam. If your friend did not play the lottery, she did not win.

Also, it it were legitimate, she would have received a certified letter.

My favorite is the widow from Nigeria who has $19M to put into trust for her son. She chose me to help her with this because "God told her so." Not family, not a local attorney...a complete stranger on the net.

I did he/she claimed to be with Microsoft and they had official looking windows logo's and everything, but I am old enough to know that it was a scam. you were right to tell your friend, these scams have been around for a long time, only if these scammers put as much time in real work they would be rich but some people fall for these scams and that is what feeds them to commit more.

I've gotten two of them. I think it is some kind of scam although they don't ask for any information about bank accounts or social security numbers.....I just marked them as spam.

It's SPAM

You shouldn't even have replied - that verifies to them that the e-mail they have sent to is actively being used and they will target you with more.
