To an extent. But this is not true across the board. Many established hip-hop artists themselves have been speaking on this issue for a long time now, and the general consenses within the community appears to be that there are too many bad seeds.
The casual observer can't tell the difference, and that's the unfortunate part of the matter. Many record companies have exploited the genre over the past 10 years in attempt to maximize profits. Therefore the garbage gets promoted and sold, while the true art is pushed aside.
Bottom line is, unless you are a true hip-hop fan with an ear for what's "real" and what isn't then don't bother. Only after the economics of the game change will we see an end to the nonsense that is getting forced fed to our kids.

I think that all types of music are affecting youth today. Music has and always will affect the way people act and think, and hip-hop is no different. Yes, it's true that the commericalized artists that we hear on the radio or see constantly on shows like MTV, can corrupt young minds, but no more than the other pollutants of the world (like violence). It's unfair to state that music, or hip-hop in general causes young people to behave erratically, such as being extremely violent, especially when leaders all over the world seem to use violence to promote power.
The truth is that the image of many hip-hop artists are commericalized, and it's those particular images that produce money. Unfortunately the real artists, like mikie79 said, are left in the dust and aren't heard enough.
Good question - thanks for bringing it up!

I would say that it is damaging but not something that will seriously damage anyone. Yes they will grow up thinking that acting a fool and talking about women as "b!tches" and "hos" is OK, they will think that money is the most important thing to establish yourself in a social class structure, they will not be able to write or speak in correct English but it is no more damaging than say TV or Video games. Ultimately every generation is dumber and more pre-occupied with wealth and celebrity than the previous one and we are doing very little to combat this - on the contrary we (as a species) are encouraging it with corporate greed and media frenzy events like American Idol.
"Down and down and down we slide,
Its too tricky to decide, between channels one and sixty three,
'Cos everything is mindless fluff,
Like this world's not dumb enough
Does anybody feel the same as me?
Is there anybody listening?

I think it plays a huge part in deteriorating the youth, yes.Simply because todays HipHop has no message, its all about wealth, power and status.
The hiphop from yesteryear had a message, about the real life in the hood is,its drug abuse was told thru a real msg,as was poverty and crime. But nowadays it glorifies hussling and crime to get wealth, then tht wealth is flaunted
There are no morals in the music anymore

Absolutely not. I think music is purely entertainment and has very little effect on people's behavior. If our youth is deteriorating, I wouldn't point the finger at the music they listen to or to hip-hop as a whole. That is absolutely ridiculous!

no, I think it is the apathetic mothers and fathers in families that destroy our youth. They have given up on the youth and would rather send them to shrinks to get overly medicated with Ritalin, Adderall, or what have you.
Let's keep it real here.
