At one time, the goddesses of inspiring springs, the Muses, became the representatives of poetry, the arts and science. Homer refers to them as one and as many, living on Olympus. Hesiod refers to them as nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, born in Pieria.
Calliope: Muse of epic song
Clio: Muse of history
Euterpe: Muse of lyric song
Thalia: Muse of comedy and bucolic poetry
Melpomene: Muse of tragedy
Terpsichore: Muse of dance
Erato: Muse of erotic poetry
Polyhymnia: Muse of sacred song
Urania: Muse of astronomy
Their main purposes are what is actually stated above next to their names. A simple explination is that they were created to give mortal man inspiration when none was to be found. Writers, musicians, lovers etc.

The 9 Muses ruled literature of different types, e.g. poetry, songs, history, etc. Homer invokes one when he begins his immortal "Iliad' and "Odyssey". The movie "Xanadu" has them in a modern setting. I recall Urania, Terpsichore, etc. as their names.
